Walmart breaks ground on Cottage Grove location
Cottage Grove, MN - May 8, 2013 - Shovels hit the dirt when City, County and Walmart representatives gathered at the site of the new 180,000 square-foot Walmart Supercenter in Cottage Grove.
“We’ll be a good neighbor" is the message Ted Jones, Walmart market manager, spoke loud and clear during the groundbreaking ceremony on May 8. Jones went on to say that the store will bring 300 jobs to the community; jobs ranging from management to front line staff. Jones said part of being a good neighbor is to keep the store attractive both inside and out, noting that the store’s manager will begin their day by surveying the grounds around the building ensuring it’s kept clean. The store will also provide opportunities for employees to serve the community through volunteerism.
“We welcome them with open arms,” said Councilmember Justin Olson. “Their presence will open greater opportunities for our residents. When they invest in a community others will follow. “
Lisa Nelson, senior manager of public affairs for Walmart, said the company is excited to be investing in Cottage Grove through their community giving program. Nelson encouraged Cottage Grove non-profits to make contact with the store manager once the store opens as there will be a lot of opportunities for partnerships. In 2012, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation gave more than $1 billion in cash and in-kind contributions around the world.
The Cottage Grove store will be located along East Point Douglas Road on the site of the old Cottage View drive-in and is expected to open spring 2014.
