National, state, and county general elections also are held in November of even-numbered years. National, state, and county primaries are held in August of even-numbered years. Minnesota has a consolidated primary ballot that allows voters to make a secret choice of a major party primary.
Primary Elections are held Aug. 9.

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 8.
Two Council Member seats and one Mayor seat will appear on the Nov. 8 General Election ballot. Members of the City Council are elected for four year terms. The salary for Council Member is $565 per month and $768 per month for Mayor.
Persons interested in running for office must meet the following criteria:
- Be at least 21 years of age
- Maintain residency in Cottage Grove for at least 30 days prior to the General Election date
- Have not filed for any other office for that year's elections
Filings for office will be accepted by the City Clerk’s office from Tuesday, Aug. 2 through Tuesday, Aug. 16 during regular City Hall office hours, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. City Hall will be open for filing until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 16.
The Filing fee is $5.00.
The withdrawal period for candidates is Aug. 2 through Aug. 18 at 5 p.m.
