Community Development
The Community Development Department works on a continuous basis with the general public, contractors,
developers, other City Departments, and external governmental bodies to carry out the City's Comprehensive Plan,
the Zoning Code, the Sign Ordinance, and other development related ordinances found in the City Code. All facets
of commercial, industrial, and residential development and redevelopment are coordinated by the Department.
The Department includes the Planning and Zoning
Division, Building Inspection Division,
Historic Preservation Division as well as the
planning component of the City Parks and Open Space System. Department personnel staff the Planning
Commission, the Parks Commission, and the Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation and assist them in making
advisory recommendations to the City Council.
In addition to the Comprehensive plan, the department is working on a variety of long range
planning projects that look to the future of Cottage Grove as a growing community. Some of these studues include
the East Ravine Master Plan, the Park Facility Study, the Gateway Park Master Plan and the Mississippi River
Corridor Study.
