Cottage Grove Ravine
Vicinity of Old Cottage Grove and the County Park
This natural landmark is a glacial tunnel valley that was formed during the Wisconsin ice age
by meltwaters flowing under the ice sheet. One of the best preserved natural communities within the city limits,
the mingling of bur oaks woods and prairies that characterized the landscape along the edge of the ravine inspired
James S. Norris to name the place “Cottage Grove” when he settled nearby in 1843.
