Grey Cloud Mound Group
Lower Grey Cloud Island [location confidential]
The largest concentration of ancient Native American earthworks in Washington County, this cluster
of more than 30 prehistoric burial mounds has been dated to the Woodland period (circa 100 BC to AD 600). Archeological
investigations conducted in 1971 also documented a Late Mississippian/Oneota cultural presence (circa AD 1000)
at this site, which is one of three intact prehistoric archeological sites located on Grey Cloud Island's
bench-like glacial terrace overlooking the Mississippi River.
