Grey Cloud Town Site
Lower Grey Cloud Island [location confidential]
Platted in 1856 as a real estate speculation designed to exploit the site's potential as a
steamboat landing, the town boomed briefly but expired in the aftermath of the severe economic depression resulting
from the Panic of 1857. Partially excavated by archeologists from the Minnesota Historical Society and the
University of Minnesota, the site has yielded important information that sheds light on pioneer life during
the Territorial Period. The site may also include Joseph R. Brown's 1838-1844 trading post.
