U.S. Navy Airfield B1 Site
Vicinity 85th St. and Geneva Ave. (Thompson Grove)
Partly built-over by a petroleum pipeline terminal and residential development, the site is
associated with the United States Navy's primary flight training program established in the Twin Cities during
World War II. Acquired by the Navy in 1942, the airfield on the Belden farm was used until 1944, and former
President George Bush was one of the student aviators who practiced landings and take-offs there. After the war,
the field was used as a private airstrip until about 1960.
