McGruff Programs

McGruff House
The McGruff House Program, established 26 years ago in Salt Lake City, Utah, remains a valuable tool in helping McGruff House Logo to create safer communities. As in other cities across the nation, the Cottage Grove McGruff House Program enlists citizen homeowner volunteers to display a McGruff House sign and agree to provide their residence as a temporary safe haven for a child in immediate need of help. Children are taught in school by their uniformed officers to use a McGruff House if they are lost, bullied, injured, or have been approached or followed by a stranger. All McGruff House volunteers agree to a criminal history and background check as is provided for under Minnesota State Statute. The City of Cottage Grove now has more than 225 Official McGruff Houses.

To obtain information and/or an application to become a McGruff House participant please contact the Community Affairs Officer Gail Griffith at (651) 458-6025. The application is also available in .pdf format.

McGruff Truck
With the cooperation of the National McGruff Truck Campaign and the City of Cottage Grove Public Works and Police Departments, your children are now safer while playing in or around city parks and their own neighborhoods.

Making neighborhoods and city parks safer for children is the goal of the McGruff Truck Program. McGruff Truck Logo It provides a way for city public works crews to offer help in emergency situations to anyone, especially young people. A McGruff Truck is easy to spot as it uses the image of McGruff the well known Crime Dog, on strategically placed decals to identify public works vehicles that children or others can turn to for help.

The message of the McGruff Truck program is, "We'll call for help". The McGruff Truck crew is trained to summon appropriate help when flagged down by a child or individual in distress. McGruff Truck crews are trained to call for help immediately and have direct access to two-way communications with our police dispatchers. Children are taught about the McGruff Truck program by uniformed officers in their elementary school.

A McGruff Truck is easy to spot. The McGruff Truck symbol is placed on the front and rear sections of all Cottage Grove Public Works vehicles. It identifies the vehicle and it's crew as sources for help when someone is in trouble. When a McGruff Truck is seen in the community, residents know that the people in it can be counted on to help and provide a temporary safe haven for anyone. Cottage Grove has Public Works McGruff Trucks.
