The mission of the City of Cottage Grove's Parks is to preserve, manage, and maintain the health of Cottage Grove's urban forest. The community's urban forest is a valuable natural resource that must be preserved and maintained to provide a better quality of life for present and future generations. Natural resource management priorities are placed in the following three main areas: preservation of existing natural resources, maintenance of existing natural resources, and the installation of new natural resources.

The City of Cottage Grove Parks pledges to continue to implement management practices that will provide for a healthy and aesthetically pleasing urban forest. The Parks is also constantly monitoring the health of our urban trees as existing and new insects and diseases occur.

One of the major problems with our oak trees is Oak Wilt Disease. Please read further about this potentially fatal oak tree disease in this web site. The public is always welcome to contact the parks division with any problems associated with our trees. Be on the lookout for tree pests anytime from April to August.

One of then new problems with ash tree is Emerald Ash Borer (EAB).  Please read further about the potentially fatal EAB tree infestation in this web site.

Cottage Grove was awarded an EAB Grant

To combat the threat posed by new invasive forest pests, Forest Protection Reserve funds were appropriated from the Outdoor Heritage Fund to the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA).  The MDA awarded the City of Cottage Grove $75,000 to combat the threat of Emerald Ash Borer.

The urban forest is very important to the residents and businesses of the City of Cottage Grove.  In order to maintain the urban forest, the City of Cottage Grove is taking an aggressive stance on preserving the ash tree population in Cottage Grove by implementing an Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) Management Plan.

The goals and objectives of this project and the City’s EAB Management Plan will outline the start a twelve year project that will encompass: public outreach and education, monitor ash trees for infestation, a boulevard tree inventory, aggressive treatment of 10” to 20” boulevard, park, and legacy ash trees, and implementing a plan to remove and replace ash trees that are not included in the EAB treatment.

The following are the EAB Project goals and objectives for the next twelve years of this project:

1.  Preservation, Protection and the Management of the Urban Forest.

2.  Public Emerald Ash Borer and Urban Forestry Outreach and Education.

3.  EAB Tree-Age® Direct Injection Treatment.

4.  Ash Tree Removal and Replacement Plan.

5.  Research on the Treatment of Ash Trees and the Cost Benefit Analysis of Treatment
