Water/Sewer/Utility FAQs

Q. How do I get a final water reading when I'm moving out?
A. Please call (651) 458-2807 one week before you move out. The meter reader will come to the house on the date that you specified, and take a final reading. A bill will be sent to you reflecting all water usage up until that point. Water that is used after the reading is taken will be billed to the new owner of the house.

Q. How do I get my water service started if I'm moving in?
Cottage Grove Water Tower A. Please call (651) 458-2807 one week before you move in. A meter reader will come out on the move date and take a final reading. The previous owner will be billed for water usage up until that time, and the current owner will be billed for the remaining usage for that billing cycle. There will be a one-time charge of $25.00 for setting up the new owner. This charge will be included on the first bill.

Q. How often are water bills sent out?
A. Residents are billed monthly for their water usage. Meters should be read during the last week of the month and your bill will then be sent approximately the 15th of the following month.  Please contact the Utility Billing clerk at (651) 458-2831 if you have questions.

Q. How are the water meters read?
A. Most Cottage Grove houses have meters on the outside of the house that must be individually read by our meter readers. Many commercial buildings and town homes have a radio meter that is equipped with a transmitter which can be read from a distance. Some of the newer homes will have these same types of meters, too.

Q. How is the sewer rate calculated?
A. The City of Cottage Grove does not have meters that measure the amount of sewage that enters the sewer system from individual residences. Therefore, your sewer rate is determined by the amount of water that comes into your house during your winter billing cycles. We do this because we do not want to include water that is used to water lawns and gardens, or water that is used to fill swimming pools, since that water never enters the sewer system. Please contact our Utility Billing department at (651) 458-2831 if you have questions.

Q. If I fill up my pool, will that affect my sewer rate?
A. No, unless you fill your pool during the winter billing cycles.

Stormwater Information

Q. What are stormwater revenues used for?
A. The revenues generated from the stormwater utility will be used for addressing water quality issues, maintenance and improvements to the stormwater system. Water quality issues include decreasing the concentrations of nutrients in wetlands and other bodies. Maintenance activities include cleaning catch basins and storm pipes, mowing and cleaning ditches, sweeping streets to minimize the clogging of the stormwater system and the maintenance and dredging of stormwater ponds. Improvements include projects like reconstructing stormwater pipes or improvements to the existing system to treat and control runoff.

Q. What billing process will be used?
A. The stormwater fee will be included on the quarterly city utility bill. Properties that are not currently served by water and sewer will receive a separate bill for the fee.

Q. What if I have additional questions?
A. For further information, you can call (651) 458-2827 between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm.

Please call (651) 458-2807 for a water turn on/turn off. Please call that number 1 week before moving in/out, so the final meter reading can be setup.
